Design 376: Leonardo, Geometry, and the Art of Manufacturing is also known as "The iron pour class" at Northwestern. We learned all about geometries which we showed off by modeling sand molds on the 3D modeling software Onshape.

My CAD was inspired by The Jester by Pablo Picasso displayed at the Art institute of Chicago.
The iron pour after class was a great team-building experience. We spent an entire day preparing: cleaning and binding the sand molds, measuring coke and iron, and reviewing safety measures.

The second day we set to pouring. Everyone poured the iron at least once. It took about two hours to fill all the molds. We waited two more hours to open the sand molds and celebrated everyone's work.

I am currently working for the Segal Design Institute at Northwestern researching patinas and chemical finishes to 'beautify' the iron sculptures. It was amazing to be able to see a project through to the end and be involved in every step.
